ROCK n'ROLL

ROCK n'ROLL

Rock is a broad genre of popular music. It has its roots in 1940s and 1950s rock and roll, a style that drew directly from the blues and rhythm and blues genres of African-American music and country music. Rock also drew strongly from genres such as electric blues and folk and incorporated influences from jazz, classical, and other musical styles.

 ROCK THROUGH TIME

In the early days of rock n roll, fashion was all about looking rebellious and breaking away from the staid constraints of the older generation. Young people wanted to look like their favorite rock stars, so mass-produced copies of iconic looks became popular. This was particularly true for teenagers who didn’t have the money to buy designer clothes.

One of the most popular clothing items in the early days of rock n roll was the leather jacket. This was popularized by Marlon Brando in “The Wild One” and then by James Dean in “Rebel Without a Cause.” Leather jackets were seen as cool and tough, symbolizing rebellion. Another iconic look in early rock n roll was the tight jeans and t-shirt combo. Elvis Presley popularized this, and it soon became the uniform of rock n rollers everywhere.

The 1950s was a decade that saw the rise of rock and roll and, with it, a new style of fashion. Leather jackets, tight jeans, t-shirts, and Converse sneakers became the wardrobe staples of a generation of young people who were ready to rebel against the establishment.

SEX

Unlike many earlier styles of popular music, rock lyrics have dealt with a wide range of themes, including romantic love, sex, drugs, pain, rebellion against "The Establishment", social concerns, and lifestyles. We can find clear examples of these themes in songs like “Proper education”, by Pink Floyd, which starts its lyrics with the phrase “We don’t need no education, we don’t need no thought control”. This sentence is a clear example of a critic against our system and its how the writers show its disconformity.
